GX Airlines: A Guide to the Routes of Guangxi's Carrier

GX Airlines, also known as Guangxi Beibu Gulf Airlines, began operating in February 2015 based at Nanning Wuxu, in Guangxi, the Chinese region that borders Vietnam. Its geographic position, facing Southeast Asia, has fueled ambitions from the start of becoming a gateway to the ASEAN area, although the international network has not yet reached that scale.

History and positioning

Guangxi, a Chinese region with a direct border with Vietnam, created GX Airlines with the idea of acquiring its own carrier able in time to act as a bridge to Southeast Asia. To date that ambition remains more a direction of development than an actual network, with traffic concentrated almost entirely on Chinese domestic routes.

The fleet

The fleet combines Airbus narrowbodies and Embraer regional jets, for a total of about 25 aircraft: a dual-family choice that allows capacity to be adapted both to busier routes and to lower-demand ones.

Routes and network

From its base at Nanning Wuxu, the network touches about 59 destinations ranging from Hunan to Guizhou, from Hainan to Jiangxi, from Inner Mongolia to Anhui, Shandong and Gansu: a widely spread domestic network, rather than one concentrated on a single geographic area.

GX Airlines is useful if you need to connect to Nanning and the Guangxi area on an all-domestic Chinese itinerary. It is not the right airline if you expect direct connections to Vietnam or the rest of Southeast Asia, despite the region's border location: the international network is not yet up to that geography. The practical tip is to check the aircraft type when booking, given the mix of Airbus and Embraer: cabin size and comfort change noticeably between the two.
