LongJiang Airlines: The Route Map From Northeast China
Based at Harbin Taiping airport, LongJiang Airlines is a relatively young carrier: it received its operating certificate in 2014 and began commercial flights on February 10, 2017, with the first Harbin-Hefei route. The name recalls the Songhua River in Heilongjiang province, and the industrial plan is explicitly to become the leading carrier of northeast China.
Routes and network
LongJiang Airlines now flies to about 44 destinations, all within China: there are no international links in its network. Besides Harbin, the airline has built a presence at airports such as Zhanjiang, Ningbo, Ordos and Jinghong, thus covering not only direct routes to and from the northeast but also point-to-point segments between second-tier cities far from its base.
The fleet
The fleet is built on just two models, the Airbus A320 and A321, for a total of about 11 aircraft: a size that is still small compared with China's large regional carriers, but consistent with a declared strategy of gradual growth toward the country's main cities over a few years from launch.
History and positioning
The LongJiang Airlines project was born with the aim of giving Heilongjiang a flagship carrier of its own, in a market where the big national groups tend to concentrate their hubs elsewhere. This makes it, more than a general-purpose airline, a direct link between a peripheral region and the rest of the country.
LongJiang Airlines makes sense for anyone who needs to link Harbin or northeast China with secondary cities within the country, not for those looking for an international flight: the entire network is domestic. If your itinerary includes an international connecting leg, plan to handle it with another carrier, because on this airline you won't find any direct option across the border.
