People's Viennaline: The Tiny Austro-Swiss Airline and the Routes It Really Flies
People's Viennaline (today simply People's) is an Austro-Swiss airline with its registered office in Vienna but its operating base at St. Gallen-Altenrhein airport in Switzerland, near Lake Constance. It is one of the smallest airlines in Europe: it operates a single scheduled route, Altenrhein-Vienna, supplemented by seasonal charter flights to the Mediterranean.
History and positioning
People's, founded as People's Viennaline and renamed in 2018, has its registered office in Vienna, but its real operating home is St. Gallen-Altenrhein airport in Switzerland, on Lake Constance. It belongs to no major alliance and is not controlled by an airline group: it is an independent regional micro-carrier, created to serve a very specific catchment area, the one between eastern Switzerland, western Austria and southern Germany. For years the airline was known to aviation enthusiasts for operating what was described as one of the shortest international scheduled links in the world, between Altenrhein and Friedrichshafen in Germany, later suspended for lack of sufficient demand.
The fleet
The current fleet is down to a single leased Embraer 170, after years in which the airline used Dornier 328 turboprops of about thirty seats. This minimal size makes the entire operation dependent on one aircraft: scheduled maintenance, a technical fault or a simple parts-availability problem can disrupt the network for several days, with no spare aircraft ready to step in.
Routes and network
The regular network is limited to a single scheduled route, Altenrhein-Vienna, flown several times a week to connect the Lake Constance region to the Austrian capital without having to transit through Zurich or Munich. In addition there are seasonal charter flights to Mediterranean destinations, typically in Greece and Spain, sold through third-party tour operators and not bookable as an independent ticket at every time of year.
What the few passengers who know it say
- A convenient connection for people living in the Lake Constance region who need to reach Vienna without a long transfer to a larger hub.
- A small, uncrowded departure airport, with check-in and boarding procedures much quicker than at a big airport.
- Reasonable prices on the main route compared with the time and cost of an equivalent trip by car or train.
The limits of such a small airline
- A single regular scheduled route: any disruption leaves very few alternatives with the same brand on the same day.
- Almost no presence on independent review platforms, which makes it hard to verify real average punctuality with solid numbers.
- Charter flight schedules that change considerably from one season to the next, without the route stability typical of a standard-sized carrier.
People's Viennaline makes sense for anyone who lives near Lake Constance and wants to avoid a transfer to Zurich or Munich in order to fly to Vienna. It is not a choice for those who want flexibility: with a single scheduled route, a weather or technical problem can leave you with no alternatives on the same brand.
Before booking, always check on the official website which charter routes are active in the season you are traveling: the network changes more often than that of a standard-sized airline.
