S7 Airlines: Russia's Largest Private Airline, Suspended from Oneworld Since 2022

S7 Airlines is Russia's leading private airline, part of the S7 Group controlled by the Fileva family, with its hub at Moscow-Domodedovo and a second base at Novosibirsk-Tolmachevo, the group's home city in western Siberia. It operates a fleet of Airbus A320-family aircraft supplemented by Embraer E170s on regional routes, with a network covering much of Russian territory and several destinations in the CIS.

History and positioning

The group was born as Sibir Airlines in the 1990s in Novosibirsk and took the commercial name S7 in 2005, in homage to the IATA code "S7" already in use. In 2010 it joined the Oneworld alliance, becoming for over a decade the main Russian bridge to the networks of American Airlines, British Airways and Qantas. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, however, changed the scene: S7 was suspended from Oneworld on April 19, 2022 because of Western sanctions, a suspension still in force, which wiped out the mutual recognition of miles and privileges with the alliance's partners.

The fleet

The short- and medium-haul fleet is made up of Airbus A319s, A320s and A321s, including some new-generation neo aircraft acquired before the sanctions. On lower-demand regional routes, especially in Siberia, E170 Embraers operate, smaller and suited to airports with limited infrastructure. As with other Russian carriers, maintaining an entirely Western fleet has become more costly since 2022 because of the difficulty of obtaining original spare parts.

What passengers say

  • Appreciated points: generally good punctuality on the main routes between Moscow and Novosibirsk, the S7 Priority loyalty program considered among the most solid on the Russian market.
  • Recurring issues: almost total absence of international connections after the Oneworld suspension, difficulty for non-Russian-speaking passengers with customer service.

Routes and network

The S7 network is organized around a dual hub, with Moscow-Domodedovo serving as the pivot for links to Europe (now almost eliminated) and Asia, while Novosibirsk remains the natural center for Siberia and the Russian Far East. The airline also links several CIS cities, including destinations in Armenia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, markets that have become more central since 2022 to offset the contraction of flights to Western Europe.

S7 Airlines remains a solid choice for those flying within Russia or to the CIS republics who don't need connections with Western carriers, while it is no longer useful for those who sought a bridge to the Oneworld networks as before 2022. Anyone who still has accumulated S7 Priority miles should check the terms for using them, since many of the partnerships that expanded their value are now frozen.
