Sylt Air: The Small Air Link That Bypasses the Ferry
Those who don't want to face the long journey by road, car shuttle train and causeway to reach the island of Sylt can rely on Sylt Air, a small German airline founded in 1963 and based at Sylt-Westerland airport, which mainly connects Hamburg and, in summer, Dortmund with small aircraft.
Over Sixty Years of Links to the Island
Active since the 1960s, Sylt Air has built its identity around a niche role: guaranteeing a fast air alternative to the long trip by road and over the railway causeway that links the island to the rest of Germany, supplementing its scheduled service with charters and sightseeing flights.
Cessnas and Partenavia, Not Airliners
The fleet consists of small piston aircraft, Cessna 150, 182 and 404, a Cessna Citation CJ2+ jet for some charters, and a Partenavia P68B, far from a traditional airliner in size, with a capacity of just a few passengers per flight.
Hamburg, Dortmund and Sightseeing Flights over the Frisian Islands
The main link remains the year-round one with Hamburg; since 2023 a seasonal summer route to Dortmund has been added, operated with a Cessna Caravan turboprop. The business is rounded out by sightseeing flights over the island of Sylt and the surrounding Frisian Islands.
It is useful for those who need to reach Sylt quickly from Hamburg without the long trip by road and causeway, or for those who want a sightseeing flight over the Frisian islands; it is less suitable for those traveling with more than a couple of suitcases or looking for a conventional scheduled flight, since the aircraft used are single-engine planes or small twins with very limited load capacity. A practical tip: on the smaller flights, the total weight of your baggage must be declared at the time of booking and not at check-in, because the aircraft is balanced in advance based on the weights reported.
