How to get to Munich International Airport

Munich city centre is approximately 35 km from the airport: the transfer takes approximately 40-45 minutes by S-Bahn, slightly longer by taxi depending on traffic.

By Car

Those arriving by car reach the city center of Munich in approximately 40-45 minutes.

By Train

S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 connect the airport directly to Munich's central station in approximately 40–45 minutes, with very frequent departures; MVV single ticket for zones M-5 about €15.10 (alternatively the Airport-City-Day-Ticket at €17.50, with unlimited trips between the airport and the city area until 6 am the next day).

By Bus

The Lufthansa Express Bus (private service, not MVV fare) connects the airport to the city centre every 20 minutes; ticket €12 online, €13 on board.
💡
Tips The S-Bahn is generally the most convenient way to reach the city center, though it requires more time compared to other major German airports due to greater distance. If your goal is the Bavarian castles (Neuschwanstein), verify if an organized tour with direct transfer is worthwhile.

Munich Airport → Hauptbahnhof (central station)

The central station is the true interchange hub: from here, ICE trains depart to Nuremberg, Stuttgart and Frankfurt, and both S1 and S8 pass through it, so you don't need to choose the line based on your continuing journey.

Munich Airport → Marienplatz

Those heading straight to the historic center get off at Marienplatz, a stop served by both S-Bahns, right under the Town Hall square and a few steps from the Viktualienmarkt.

Munich Airport → Allianz Arena

For a Bayern Munich match, the most direct route is the Lufthansa Express Bus to Nordfriedhof, from which the U6 toward Garching takes you in a few stops to Fröttmaning, with a dedicated exit to the stadium; alternatively, you can transfer to the same U6 at Marienplatz.

Munich Airport → Messe München

The Riem fairground, venue for shows like bauma, is reached with the S8 to Ostbahnhof and the transfer to U2 toward Messestadt Ost: a journey of about 45-50 minutes, often faster than taxi during rush hour.

Car rental at Munich International Airport

The major car rental companies are represented in the arrivals area.

For the security deposit, a credit card registered in the driver's name is required, along with a license and passport.

Hotels near Munich International Airport

Munich is 35 km from the airport and the S-Bahn takes 40-45 minutes to the main station: enough to weigh on a departure before 8, too little to justify a night next to the runway for anyone with time to sightsee. The Hilton between the two terminals covers long layovers and dawn flights, while Freising, at the end of the S1 line, offers a quieter alternative with traditional-style hotels. For a stay in the city it pays to choose by line: the main station is the rail hub, and the Altstadt can be reached with no changes on the S1 and S8.

Pros
  • On foot from the terminals, with no S-Bahn or taxi
  • The nearby Munich Airport Center has shops and restaurants useful for free time
