How to get to Vienna International Airport

Vienna is accessible from its airport via the fast CAT train, more economical regional trains, or buses, all departing directly from the terminal. From 7 September 2026 to 31 October 2027, however, because of the Stammstrecke works, the CAT runs as a bus and the S7 stops at St. Marx.

By Car

Visitors arriving by car follow the A4 motorway, which connects the airport to central Vienna in approximately 20-25 minutes.

By Train

Normally the City Airport Train (CAT) reaches Wien Mitte station in 16 minutes; the ticket costs approximately 14.90 euros per leg (cheaper if purchased online in advance). Regional S-Bahn trains (line S7) are slower (about 25 minutes) but cost about 4.30 euros, and are also valid with Vienna urban transport tickets. From 7 September 2026 to 31 October 2027, because of work on the Stammstrecke between Wien Mitte and Rennweg, the CAT does not run on rails (it is replaced by buses, see By Bus) and the S7 ends at St. Marx, outside the centre, where you continue by tram 18 or 71. The REX 7 to Wien Hauptbahnhof (about 20 minutes) and the long-distance Railjet trains to Wien Hauptbahnhof remain in service.

By Bus

There are also active bus links to various parts of the city and surrounding regions, particularly useful for those not heading to the city centre. From 7 September 2026 to 31 October 2027 the CAT is replaced by premium buses between Terminal 3 and Wien Mitte/Landstraße: about 21 minutes of travel, up to five departures per hour in each direction, tickets from 7 euros (free under 15). During that period the Vienna Airport Lines buses add connections from Praterstern and Karlsplatz.
💡
Tips If you are not in a hurry, the S7 regional train costs significantly less than the CAT and is equally convenient and direct. From 7 September 2026 to 31 October 2027, however, the S7 stops at St. Marx and requires tram 18 or 71: for Wien Hauptbahnhof the REX 7 is the better choice, for Wien Mitte the CAT bus. During that period allow a little extra time.

How to get to Vienna from VIE

Normally the quickest connection to the city center is the City Airport Train (CAT), reaching Wien Mitte station in 16 minutes; more economical regional trains are also available, as well as bus service. From 7 September 2026 to 31 October 2027 the CAT is replaced by buses, which take about 21 minutes to Wien Mitte/Landstraße.

By Train

The railway station is integrated within the terminal, with direct access clearly marked from the arrivals area. From 7 September 2026 to 31 October 2027 the S7 only runs as far as St. Marx (connection with trams 18 and 71), while the REX 7 takes you to Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 20 minutes; long-distance Railjet trains to Wien Hauptbahnhof continue to run.

Vienna → Wien Mitte

City Airport Train connects the airport to Wien Mitte/Landstraße with no intermediate stops; from here lines U3 and U4 branch out to the rest of the city. Note: from 7 September 2026 to 31 October 2027, because of work on the Stammstrecke between Wien Mitte and Rennweg, the CAT is replaced by dedicated buses, which cover the same route in about 21 minutes.

Vienna → Stephansplatz and the old town

Normally the S7 descends to Wien Mitte in about 20 minutes; from there just two U4 stops take you to Stephansplatz, in the heart of the old town in front of the Cathedral. Alternatively, Vienna Airport Lines buses stop directly at Schwedenplatz, a few steps from the same square. Until 31 October 2027, with the S7 stopping at St. Marx, the CAT bus to Wien Mitte or the line to Schwedenplatz is the better choice.

Vienna → Prater and Messe Wien

Normally, continuing on S7 beyond Wien Mitte you reach Wien Praterstern in about 30 minutes: the station overlooks Prater park and the Messe Wien fairground area, convenient for those attending a trade show or wanting to ride the ferris wheel. Until 31 October 2027, with the S7 stopping at St. Marx, the Vienna Airport Lines bus to Praterstern leaves from the airport.

Vienna → Vienna International Centre (UNO-City)

The seat of the United Nations in the Donaustadt district is reached by Vienna Airport Lines bus in about half an hour, getting off on Wagramer Straße: it's the most direct route for those attending a UN or OSCE conference without passing through downtown.

Car rental at Vienna International Airport

Major car rental companies are present in the arrivals area.

Car rental is convenient for those wishing to explore the Wachau (Danube Valley) or other areas of Austria beyond Vienna alone.

Bring your driving license, identity document, and credit card in the driver's name for the security deposit; photograph any pre-existing damage before departing. Austrian citizens and nationals of other EU/EEA countries may drive with their national license alone; all others generally need an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well.

Hotels near Vienna International Airport

Vienna is about 20 km from the centre and the train normally takes 16 minutes, but until October 2027 works on the S-Bahn line are changing the connections: the CAT is replaced by shuttle buses to Wien Mitte (21 minutes), while the S7 stops at St. Marx and forces a change. That is why the direct trains to the central station, which are unaffected by the works, are currently the most predictable connections. With an early-morning flight a hotel next to the terminals removes every uncertainty; those staying a few days get more from the city by choosing the area according to its connection with the airport.
At the airport

At the airport

The Moxy is 450 m from terminals 1 and 3 and has a direct tunnel to terminal 3 and the station; the NH Vienna Airport Conference Center is a 6-minute walk away, opposite the arrivals hall.

Best for: Flights before 8 a.m. or late arrivals, without depending on the replacement buses for the train.

Pros
  • From your room to check-in on foot, even in bad weather thanks to the Moxy tunnel
  • Station for direct trains to Hauptbahnhof a few steps from both hotels
  • With the S-Bahn works you need no buses or changes in the early hours
Cons
  • Around it there are only offices, runways and car parks: in the evening you stay in the hotel
  • The city is 16-21 minutes away by public transport, with replacement buses until October 2027

Wien Mitte and Stadtpark

CAT shuttle bus from the airport to Wien Mitte/Landstraße in 21 minutes, every 12-15 minutes; then U3 or U4. From Wien Mitte just two stops on the U3 reach Stephansplatz.

Best for: Those who want the old town a few minutes away and a hotel reached by the CAT shuttle bus.

Pros
  • A single vehicle from the airport, with a stop in front of the hotel
  • Stephansplatz is two stops away on the U4
  • Stadtpark, Belvedere and Ringstrasse on foot
Cons
  • Until October 2027 the CAT is a bus: the 21 minutes depend on traffic
  • The Landstrasse area is more quiet than lively in the evening

Central station (Hauptbahnhof)

Direct Railjet trains from the airport to Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes, twice an hour, even during the closure of the central S-Bahn.

Best for: Those continuing by train to other cities or who prefer the direct connection that is most independent of the works.

Pros
  • Direct train of about 15 minutes, bypassing the works
  • Trains to Salzburg, Graz and other cities leave from here
  • Stephansplatz in about 10 minutes by metro
Cons
  • There are only two trains an hour: with an early flight you watch the clock
  • The area around the station is modern but not very characterful

In Vienna the offer revolves around the lounges run by the airport: the VIENNA Lounge for gates C and D and the SKY Lounge for gates F and G, both with showers, Priority Pass and paid entry, and linked by a shuttle to the other sector.
