Belize: main airports
Belize has a single international airport: Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport, near Belize City, the country's gateway and starting point for domestic flights to the islands (cayes) and Maya archaeological sites.
Belize: recommended activities
Belize: visa and entry requirements
Most nationalities (European Union, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia) do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 30 days, extendable locally. The passport must be valid for the duration of the stay; proof of sufficient funds and onward travel is required.
Belize: safety
Belize City has above-average regional crime rates in some outlying areas: most visitors only pass through it while transferring to the cayes or the interior, without spending the night. The tourist islands (Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker) and archaeological sites are generally safe with the usual precautions. Hurricane season runs from June to November.
Belize: health situation
No vaccination is mandatory for those arriving from Europe; a yellow fever certificate is required only for those arriving from a country at risk of transmission. Dengue risk, and to a lesser extent malaria, is present especially in rural areas and the inland jungle: mosquito protection is recommended for those visiting Maya sites or nature reserves. Health facilities are limited outside Belize City: insurance with possible evacuation is strongly recommended for anyone exploring remote areas.
Belize: currency, payments and connectivity
The currency is the Belize dollar (BZD), pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of 2:1; the US dollar is accepted almost everywhere, often at the same exchange rate. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and tourist restaurants, less so on the smaller islands where cash remains important. There are no widespread Western ride-hailing apps: local taxis (green licence plate) are the main means of transport, generally at an agreed rate. For connectivity, the operators Digi and Smart sell prepaid SIM cards. For driving (on the right, as in Italy), the national licence is generally accepted for a short stay.
