Chad: main airports
Chad is served by Hassan Djamous Airport, the country's only major airport, in the capital N'Djamena. Intercontinental connections are limited to a few routes to Europe and the Middle East, including Paris, Istanbul and Algiers.
The country is going through a phase of serious regional instability: it is not considered a tourist destination at present.
Chad: recommended activities
Chad: visa and entry requirements
A visa is required for most nationalities. Since 11 December 2024, Chad has introduced a mandatory e-visa system through the official portal evisa.td (available only in French), and since 11 May 2026 applications can only be submitted online.
Always check with the relevant embassy or consulate for the specific requirements for your nationality before any travel consideration, given the country's context.
Chad: safety
The United States classifies Chad at Level 4 ("Do Not Travel"), the highest level, for risk of crime, terrorism, unrest, kidnapping and the presence of landmines; outside the capital N'Djamena, the ability to provide emergency consular assistance is extremely limited.
The Italian Foreign Ministry strongly advises against any travel to the country except for genuine necessity, citing a high risk of terrorist attacks throughout the territory, linked to Chad's involvement in the regional fight against Boko Haram. In particular, the border areas with Libya, Nigeria, Niger and the Central African Republic, the Lake Chad region (Kanem and Lac provinces) and the strip up to 30 km from the border with Cameroon are strongly discouraged. The ongoing conflict in Sudan has also generated a serious refugee crisis in the east of the country. This is not a tourist page in the ordinary sense: those transiting through this airport almost always do so for diplomatic, humanitarian or professional reasons.
Chad: health situation
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for those arriving from a country at risk of transmission or who have transited through its airport.
Malaria is present throughout the territory with a high risk, resistant to chloroquine: antimalarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended regardless of the itinerary in the country, to be arranged with a doctor specializing in travel medicine. Healthcare infrastructure is inadequate according to US authorities: travel medical insurance with evacuation coverage is essential.
Chad: currency, payments and connectivity
The currency is the Central African CFA franc (XAF). The official languages are French and Arabic.
Travel should be arranged through trusted contacts (one's own organization) rather than relying on generic public transport, given the country's situation.
