Airports in Christmas Island

Christmas Island: main airports

Christmas Island has a single airport: Christmas Island Airport, the only air link to this Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean, famous for the annual migration of millions of red crabs.

Christmas Island: recommended activities

Christmas Island: visa and entry requirements

Being an external territory of Australia, the same Australian entry rules apply: those arriving from abroad (not from mainland Australian territory) are subject to normal Australian customs and immigration procedures, with an electronic visa required depending on nationality, as for entry into Australia. Those arriving directly from mainland Australian territory do not need any further formalities beyond those already completed for Australia.

Christmas Island: safety

Christmas Island is a very safe territory, with crime practically absent. The main point of attention concerns nature: during the red crab migration (generally October-December, depending on the rains) some roads are closed or slowed down to protect the animals, more an experience than a risk.

Christmas Island: health situation

No vaccination is mandatory for those arriving from Australia. Healthcare facilities are limited, with only one small hospital on the island: for complex cases, evacuation to Perth, on the Australian mainland, is common. Travel insurance remains a good standard practice.

Christmas Island: currency, payments and connectivity

The currency is the Australian dollar (AUD), as in the rest of Australia. Credit cards are accepted at most tourist facilities, but being a small island it's advisable to also have cash. There are no ride-hailing apps: car rental is the main way to get around, given the absence of structured public transport. For connectivity, the Australian operators Telstra and Optus cover the island with variable availability. For driving (on the left, as in the rest of Australia), a national driving licence is generally accepted for visitors.
