Czech Republic: visa and entry requirements

The Czech Republic is part of the Schengen area: EU citizens enter freely with an ID card or passport, while non-EU citizens (United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia) do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in a 180-day period, valid for the entire Schengen area.

Czech Republic: safety

The Czech Republic is generally very safe for tourists, with violent crime rare: the usual precautions against pickpocketing in crowded areas of Prague (historic center, Charles Bridge, public transport) are sufficient. Beware of unofficial currency exchange offices in central Prague, which often apply hidden unfavorable fees.

Czech Republic: health situation

No vaccination is required for entry into the country. The Czech healthcare system is of good European standard; for EU citizens the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) covers urgent care in public hospitals, while other visitors are advised to have travel insurance with medical coverage.

Czech Republic: currency, payments and connectivity

The currency is the Czech koruna (CZK): the Czech Republic is among the few EU countries not to have adopted the euro. Credit cards and contactless payments are widely accepted in cities, less so in small towns where cash remains useful. Bolt and Uber operate in Prague and other major cities. For connectivity, the operators O2, T-Mobile and Vodafone sell prepaid SIM cards. For driving, EU citizens use their national license; others are generally also required to have an International Driving Permit (IDP).
