Equatorial Guinea: main airports
Equatorial Guinea has a single international airport: Malabo Airport, the capital, located on the island of Bioko, separate from the mainland part of the country (Río Muni, where the largest city Bata is located).
Equatorial Guinea: recommended activities
Equatorial Guinea: visa and entry requirements
A visa is mandatory for all nationalities, with a detailed procedure: passport valid for 6 months with blank pages, passport photo, mandatory yellow fever certificate, notarised invitation letter from a tourism agency or detailed itinerary with confirmed hotel bookings, proof of sufficient funds, round-trip ticket and travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage. Processing takes at least 2-4 weeks, with single-entry tourist visas valid for 30 to 90 days. US citizens must complete an online e-visa application before departure.
Equatorial Guinea: safety
Equatorial Guinea is classified as Level 2 ('exercise increased caution') by the United States. There is no significant risk of terrorism or kidnapping, but common crime requires attention: avoid walking or driving at night, keep a low profile and avoid displaying valuables such as watches or expensive jewellery.
Equatorial Guinea: health situation
A yellow fever certificate is mandatory for entry into the country, an integral part of the visa application. Equatorial Guinea is a malaria-risk area: prophylaxis is strongly recommended together with mosquito protection. Healthcare facilities are limited: insurance with medical evacuation, already required for the visa, is in any case essential in practice.
Equatorial Guinea: currency, payments and connectivity
The currency is the Central African CFA franc (XAF), pegged to the euro at a fixed exchange rate. Cash is essential in most situations; credit cards are accepted only at a few international hotels in Malabo. There are no widespread Western ride-hailing apps: local taxis are the main means of transport. For connectivity, the operators GETESA and Muni sell prepaid SIM cards. For driving, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is generally also required alongside the national one.
