Haiti: main airports
Haiti has a single international airport: Port-au-Prince Airport, the capital.
Haiti: recommended activities
Haiti: visa and entry requirements
A visa is generally not required for short tourist stays for most Western nationalities, including Italian. However, the visa question is secondary compared to the country's security situation, which effectively makes tourism not recommended in the current context.
Haiti: safety
It must be said with the utmost clarity: Haiti is going through a very serious security crisis, with armed groups effectively controlling much of the capital Port-au-Prince, including the surroundings of the airport itself, the scene of repeated episodes of violence and temporary closures of the airport in recent years. The United States classifies the country as Level 4 ('do not travel'), the highest alert level, citing widespread crime, frequent kidnappings even of foreigners, civil unrest and collapsed healthcare and security infrastructure. This is not a context for tourism: anyone who must travel there for professional, humanitarian or diplomatic reasons should do so exclusively through their own organisation, with dedicated security measures and without independent movement around the city.
Haiti: health situation
The country's healthcare facilities are largely collapsed, worsened by the ongoing security crisis: insurance with emergency medical evacuation is essential for anyone who must travel to Haiti. Cholera has been endemic in some areas since 2022: vaccination and hygiene precautions are strongly recommended.
Haiti: currency, payments and connectivity
The currency is the Haitian gourde (HTG); the US dollar is widely used in parallel. Given the current situation, standard tourist information on transport or connectivity apps is not relevant: anyone travelling to Haiti for professional or humanitarian reasons should refer exclusively to the logistical guidance of their own organisation.
