Airports in Iceland

Iceland: main airports

Iceland has five airports with active connections: Keflavík Airport, the main international gateway, Reykjavík Airport in the city for domestic flights, and the regional airports of Akureyri in the north, Egilsstaðir in the east and Ísafjörður in the western fjords.

Iceland: visa and entry requirements

As a member of the Schengen area (while not being part of the European Union), Iceland does not require a visa for EU citizens, who travel with a valid ID card or passport, nor for citizens of many other countries (including the US, Canada, the UK, Australia) for tourist stays of up to 90 days.

Iceland: safety

Iceland is generally considered among the safest countries in the world, with an almost non-existent crime rate. The main risk for visitors is linked to nature: extreme and unpredictable weather, icy roads in winter, and volcanic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula, which has seen several eruptions between 2023 and 2025 in the Grindavík area, a few kilometres from the Blue Lagoon. There is no active eruption underway, but it is considered likely that a new one will occur: the Blue Lagoon generally remains open with established evacuation protocols, but always check updates on safetravel.is before visiting the area.

Iceland: health situation

No specific vaccinations are required for entry. The healthcare system is of a high standard; the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is valid for EU citizens. Travel insurance nonetheless remains advisable, especially for those hiking in remote areas.

Iceland: currency, payments and connectivity

The currency is the Icelandic króna (ISK); electronic payments are widespread, cash is rarely needed. There are no widespread ride-hailing apps like Uber: local taxis are the main means of transport besides one's own car. For connectivity, the operators Síminn, Vodafone Iceland and Nova sell prepaid SIM cards. The cost of living in Iceland is among the highest in Europe.
