Airports in Solomon Islands

Solomon Islands: main airports

The Solomon Islands are served by Honiara International Airport, also known as Henderson Field (the site of a famous World War II battle) and today the main hub of the national carrier Solomon Airlines. Confirmed direct international connections are with Brisbane, Australia, and Nadi, Fiji; a new direct connection with Nauru is also announced for August 2026.

Solomon Islands: visa and entry requirements

According to the official Solomon Islands immigration portal, the standard tourist visa allows a 90-day single-entry stay, with the visa valid for up to 180 days from the date of issue; some commercial sources instead indicate a free 30-day permit on arrival for many Western nationalities, including Italy. Given the discrepancy between sources, always check the updated conditions with the relevant embassy or high commission before departure.

In any case, a passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity is required, along with proof of a return or onward ticket and sufficient funds for the stay.

Solomon Islands: safety

The United States classifies the Solomon Islands at Level 2 ("Exercise Increased Caution"), for health risks, the presence of unexploded World War II ordnance, crime, and the possibility that civil unrest could develop quickly and without warning.

In November 2021, protests against the change in diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China escalated into violence in Honiara, with the burning of the Chinatown district and the intervention of police and Australian armed forces; the 2024 general elections, by contrast, were held peacefully. Geopolitical tensions between China, Taiwan and the United States remain in the background, with the sources consulted not reporting recent street unrest.

Solomon Islands: health situation

Malaria is present with high risk throughout the archipelago, predominantly from Plasmodium vivax: antimalarial prophylaxis is recommended.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required only for those arriving from a country at risk of the disease, which is not present locally: for those departing directly from Italy, it is therefore not required.

Solomon Islands: currency, payments and connectivity

The currency is the Solomon Islands dollar (SBD). The official language is English, while Pijin, an English-based creole, is the lingua franca widespread throughout the archipelago alongside over 70 local languages.
