Tajikistan: visa and entry requirements
Most nationalities can obtain an e-visa online, valid for entry via the airports of Dushanbe, Khujand and Kulob, as well as land border crossings with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and China.
If traveling the Pamir Highway or visiting the Gorno-Badakhshan region (GBAO), a separate GBAO permit is also required, to be applied for together with the e-visa or afterward.
Tajikistan: safety
Tajikistan is generally safe for visitors in the main tourist areas and in Dushanbe, with the usual precautions.
The autonomous region of Gorno-Badakhshan (GBAO), crossed by the Pamir Highway, requires a special permit and can occasionally experience local tensions: always check your country's updated travel advisories before planning an itinerary in this area.
Tajikistan: health situation
Vaccinations against hepatitis A and B and typhoid are generally recommended; consult a doctor specializing in travel medicine in advance, especially for those traveling the Pamir Highway or venturing into remote areas.
It is advisable to drink only bottled water.
Tajikistan: currency, payments and connectivity
The currency is the Tajikistani somoni (TJS). The official language is Tajik, alongside Russian as a widespread lingua franca.
Taxis have no meter: always agree on the fare before getting in, as there are no published fixed prices.
