Airports in Togo

Togo: main airports

Togo is served by Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport, the country's only international airport, in the capital Lomé, on the Gulf of Guinea. The airport is also the main hub of ASKY Airlines, a pan-African carrier with a network covering over 25 destinations in West and Central Africa.

The country offers the UNESCO World Heritage site of Koutammakou, with the characteristic Batammariba tata houses, as well as the Atlantic coast beaches and the hilly region of Kpalimé, inland toward the border with Ghana.

Togo: visa and entry requirements

Since 2023 Togo has abolished visa on arrival: all visitors, including Italian and EU citizens, must apply for an e-visa online in advance on the official government portal (voyage.gouv.tg), with processing times of up to 5 business days.

The cost varies by duration: about 25,000 CFA francs for a single entry up to 15 days, up to 65,000 CFA francs for a multiple entry of 31-90 days. A passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the visa duration, a recent photo and proof of a return flight are required.

Togo: safety

The United States classifies Togo at Level 2 ("Exercise Increased Caution"), for risk of crime, terrorism, unrest and kidnapping. The Italian Foreign Ministry strongly advises against travel to the northern Savanes region, where a state of emergency declared in June 2022 after a terrorist attack on the border with Burkina Faso remains in force, and recommends heightened vigilance in the Kara region.

Lomé and the south of the country are generally calmer, but always check your country's updated travel advisories. An increase in piracy in the Gulf of Guinea has also been reported, which advises against pleasure boating along the coast.

Togo: health situation

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry into the country for all travelers over 9 months of age, with no exceptions based on origin: get vaccinated at least 10 days before departure.

Malaria is present year-round throughout the territory: antimalarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended, to be arranged with a doctor specializing in travel medicine.

Togo: currency, payments and connectivity

The currency is the West African CFA franc (XOF), pegged to the euro at a fixed exchange rate. The official language is French, alongside numerous local languages including Ewe and Kabiyè.

Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for guides and long-distance transport. Electrical outlets are type C and E, at 220V.
