Airports in Vanuatu

Vanuatu: main airports

Vanuatu is served by two international airports: Bauerfield Airport, near the capital Port Vila on the island of Efate, the country's main gateway, and Santo-Pekoa Airport, near Luganville, the country's second city on the island of Espiritu Santo.

A volcanic archipelago in the South Pacific, Vanuatu is famous for diving on the wreck of the SS President Coolidge, the active volcano of Mount Yasur on the island of Tanna, and Melanesian cultural traditions still deeply rooted.

Vanuatu: visa and entry requirements

Most nationalities do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 30 days. A passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity, a return or onward ticket, and sufficient funds for the stay are required.

For longer stays, an extension of up to 120 days can be requested at the immigration office, to be submitted before the initial 30 days expire.

Vanuatu: safety

Vanuatu is generally considered a safe country, with violent crime against tourists rare.

The main risk is natural: the country lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is subject to tropical cyclones, especially from November to April, as well as seismic and volcanic activity. Always check local weather advisories during cyclone season.

Vanuatu: health situation

The hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for all travelers. There is a malaria risk throughout the country, higher in the northern provinces of Sanma, Penama and Torba and in the months from December to May: antimalarial prophylaxis and the use of repellents and mosquito nets are advisable.

Make sure routine vaccinations are up to date before departure.

Vanuatu: currency, payments and connectivity

The currency is the vatu (VUV), with no subunits. Credit cards are accepted at major hotels and resorts in Port Vila, but cash remains essential elsewhere, including the smaller islands.

The official languages are Bislama, English and French; Bislama, an English-based creole, is the country's lingua franca.
