24 hours in Bratislava: what to see
Bratislava is the world's only capital that borders two other countries, Austria and Hungary, so close to Vienna that it can be reached in less than an hour by train.
Slovakia's capital on the Danube, it offers a compact historic centre dominated by a white castle visible from every corner of the city, almost entirely walkable in a day.
Bratislava Castle marks a good start to the day: the white fortress with its inverted table shape dominates the city from atop a hill overlooking the Danube, with courtyards and terraces offering views of the entire old town.
Descending toward the center, you reach the Old Town, with its narrow pedestrian streets and the Cathedral of Saint Martin, where Hungarian kings were crowned for centuries.
Continuing on, you encounter Michael's Gate, the only surviving medieval gate of the city fortifications, topped by a tower you can climb for views over the rooftops of downtown.
For lunch, restaurants in the old town serve bryndzové halušky, potato dumplings with sheep cheese typical of Slovak cuisine.
In the afternoon, you cross the SNP Bridge, which leads to the UFO Bridge: this flying saucer-shaped observation platform suspended over the Danube dominates the entire city, and on clear days, even part of Austria.
In the old town, you hunt for its famous bronze statues, such as Čumil, the worker emerging from a manhole, which have become a game among visitors.
By evening, returning toward the center, the restaurants around the main plaza confirm themselves as the simplest choice for dinner, with the illuminated castle in the background.
The Castle, Old Town, and Cathedral of Saint Martin suffice to restore Bratislava's historical soul, while an afternoon choice between the UFO Bridge and the bronze statues in the center adds either a panoramic or curious dimension.
Devín Castle, just outside the city at the confluence of the Danube and Morava, remains a chapter for a second visit. Watching Bratislava Castle light up above the Danube at sunset captures the city's most direct image.
