Dubrovnik: the walls above the Adriatic

Independent maritime republic for centuries, Dubrovnik preserves one of the Mediterranean's best-preserved walled perimeters, also known today as the Game of Thrones backdrop.

The walled old city, closed to traffic, can be explored entirely on foot.

Almost two kilometers of walking along the Walls of Dubrovnik, built between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, allow one to look down at both the red-tiled roofs of the city and the Adriatic Sea.

Descended from the walls, one walks along the Stradun, the main street paved with white stone rebuilt in uniform style after the 1667 earthquake.

Just steps away, the Rector's Palace, seat of the government of the ancient Republic of Ragusa, still preserves the furnishings and halls of the power of that time.

In the afternoon, the cable car of Mount Srđ, destroyed during the 1991-92 siege and reopened only in 2010, climbs in a few minutes to a vantage point over the entire old city.

From the top of Mount Srđ, you can still spot lighter tiles among the roofs, marking the points struck by 1990s bombing and later reconstructed using original materials.

Many corners of the old city became recognizable to Game of Thrones fans long before becoming known for their medieval history, briefly reversing the order of things.
