Managua: what to see in 1 day

Managua preserves in the city's heart a cathedral left in ruins by the 1972 earthquake, never rebuilt and transformed into a silent monument to the memory of the disaster.

Nicaragua's capital overlooking its namesake lake, it has had to reinvent its centre multiple times after earthquakes and civil war, developing today along a revitalised waterfront and hills with views over the city.

The Old Cathedral is visited first: damaged and never restored after the 1972 earthquake, its neoclassical facade in ruins remains one of the city's most photographed monuments, a symbol of Managuan resilience.

Just a few steps away lies the New Metropolitan Cathedral, with modern architecture featuring egg-shaped domes, built after the earthquake at a safer location in the city.

Continuing toward the lake, you reach Puerto Salvador Allende, the revitalized waterfront with gardens, sculptures, and restaurants overlooking Managua Lake.

For lunch, restaurants along the waterfront offer gallo pinto and other dishes of Nicaraguan cuisine, often accompanied by lake views.

At Loma de Tiscapa, the hill overlooking downtown, with the black silhouette of the revolutionary Sandino and a crater lake at its feet.

The Malecón of Managua, the lakeside promenade, is instead where residents gather during the cooler hours of the day.

By evening, returning to Puerto Salvador Allende, the restaurants overlooking the lake remain the most direct destination for dinner, with the city lights switching on around.

Old Cathedral, New Cathedral, and Puerto Salvador Allende already compose Managua's recent history, while an afternoon choice between Loma de Tiscapa and Malecón adds either panoramic or lakeside dimension.

The National Palace of Culture and a trip to the islands of Lake Nicaragua remain chapters for a second visit. Seeing the ruined facade of the Old Cathedral against the sunset sky captures Managua in a single glance.
