Almaty Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Almaty Airport lies about 18 km northeast of the city centre, along the road to Taldykorgan; there's no rail link, and the transfer runs by road, by taxi (25-30 minutes, around 2,500-4,000 tenge) or by city buses in about 30 minutes. Travellers on business or leisure find the upscale hotels concentrated along the Dostyk and Al-Farabi axis, in the so-called Golden Square at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains; those who want to shave a few minutes off the transfer without straying too far from the historic centre can look to the Abylai Khan and Jetisu area, halfway between the terminal and Republic Square.
