Auckland International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Auckland Airport is in Mangere, about 21 km south of the city centre: by taxi or rideshare the transfer takes 30-45 minutes and costs 60-80 New Zealand dollars, while the AirportLink bus connects the terminals to the centre in about 45-50 minutes for 6.50 dollars per person (the old SkyBus Express service is no longer running). For those staying more than one night the centre is almost always the better choice, with the Viaduct Harbour waterfront and Queen Street within walking distance of the hotels. Sleeping near the terminals makes sense mainly for very early morning departures or a short layover, when along Kirkbride Road and Ascot Road, 5-10 minutes by free shuttle from the terminals, there is a row of budget motels designed just for this.

Mangere and Kirkbride Road

Airport area · Almost all the motels along Kirkbride Road and Ascot Road offer a free shuttle to the terminals, available on request even in the early morning hours; the ride takes 5-10 minutes.

Best for: Departures before 7 and short layovers, for those who don't want to risk traffic on State Highway 20.

Pros
  • Free shuttles running even before dawn, with no reliance on urban buses
  • Free parking almost everywhere, handy for those arriving by car and leaving the vehicle during the trip
Cons
  • Only the industrial area of Mangere around: for dinner you almost always stay at the hotel
  • For an evening in the centre you still need 30-40 minutes by car or bus, there and back

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Airport Gateway Hotel: At 206 Kirkbride Road, about 5 minutes from the terminal with a free shuttle available 24 hours on request; in-house restaurant and bar for those who don't want to go out in the evening.
  • Oakwood Manor Motor Lodge: At 610 Massey Road, on about 2 acres of land 5 minutes from the terminal; outdoor pool and free airport shuttle on request.

Best for: Those staying more than one night who want the waterfront, restaurants and museums within walking distance.

Pros
  • Viaduct Harbour, Queen Street and the Sky Tower within walking distance of the waterfront hotels
  • No reliance on shuttles: taxis, city buses and ferries to the gulf islands all leave from the centre
Cons
  • No direct train to the airport: every transfer requires a bus or a car
  • At rush hour the trip to the airport can take more than 45 minutes due to traffic on State Highway 20
