Dionysios Solomos Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Zakynthos Airport is just 4-5 km from Zakynthos town, but the KTEL buses towards the centre are infrequent and absent at weekends, so almost everyone travels by taxi (13-18 euros by day, up to 20 at night). From here the island's southern coast opens up into the two best-known resorts: Argassi, a stone's throw from the town, and Laganas, the island's most famous beach and nightlife spot, within the boundaries of the National Marine Park established for the Caretta caretta turtles.

Argassi

Neighbourhood · About 5-8 km from the airport, 15 minutes by taxi (18-22 euros); Zakynthos town is just 3 km away, also reachable by bicycle along the coast.

Best for: Travellers who want a quieter seafront, just minutes from both the airport and the shops of Zakynthos town.

Pros
  • Just minutes from both the airport and the centre of Zakynthos town, convenient for those who don't want to choose between the two
  • A quieter seafront than Laganas, with pebble and sand beaches right in front of the hotels
Cons
  • Less nightlife than Laganas: those looking for venues and music until late will be disappointed
  • The area's budget hotels aren't always of an even standard: it's worth checking individual reviews

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Admiral De Luxe: An all-inclusive hotel by the sea in Argassi, 0.8 km from the main beach and 15 minutes by car from Laganas; a good compromise between price and closeness to the sea.

Laganas

Neighbourhood · About 4-7 km from the airport depending on the area, 15-20 minutes by taxi (about 25 euros); there is no direct bus from the airport, you first need to reach the centre of Zakynthos town.

Best for: Travellers who want the island's longest beach and its liveliest nightlife, accepting to stay within the boundaries of the National Marine Park.

Pros
  • A 9 km beach, the widest on the island, with shallow waters suited to families
  • The greatest concentration of bars and venues in Zakynthos, with boat trips to the islet of Marathonisi to see the turtles
Cons
  • Between June and September, the National Marine Park imposes evening restrictions on the beach to protect the nesting of the Caretta caretta turtles
  • A noisy area in summer, especially in the central streets: to be avoided by those seeking quiet

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Akropolis studios: Studios and flats with an in-house restaurant about 4 km from the airport, near Laganas beach.
