El Salvador International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
El Salvador International Airport, still called Comalapa by locals, is not close to the capital: it sits on the coast, in the municipality of San Luis Talpa, about 40 km and nearly an hour's drive on the motorway from San Salvador. Travellers with a short layover or an early-morning departure do well to stay near the terminal, in the San Luis Talpa and Santa Clara area; those with more days to see the capital find the city's real life, with its distinct neighbourhoods, only by heading all the way to San Salvador.
San Luis Talpa (airport area)
Airport area · About 3 km and 5 minutes by car from the terminals, along the Autopista a Comalapa (km 40.5); the hotel also offers a free airport shuttle.
Best for: Short layovers, evening arrivals or dawn departures, when travelling all the way to San Salvador doesn't make sense.
Pros
- A transfer of just a few minutes from the airport, useful for early-morning flights or one-night layovers
- Free airport shuttle, pool and spa for anyone who just needs to rest between two flights
Cons
- San Luis Talpa is a service area along the motorway: very little to do or see on foot
- Reaching San Salvador still takes about 40 km and nearly an hour by car
Recommended hotels in this area
- Quality Hotel Real Aeropuerto San Salvador: 209 rooms just 3 km from the terminals (about 5 minutes), with free airport shuttle, outdoor pool, spa and buffet breakfast included; designed for travellers with a layover or a dawn flight.

San Salvador, the capital
City centre · About 40 km and 40-50 minutes on the motorway from the airport (even over an hour in traffic); several hotels offer a private transfer on request, for a fee.
Best for: Travellers staying more than one night who want to see the capital: Centro Histórico for the monuments, Escalón and Zona Rosa for restaurants and nightlife.
Pros
- Centro Histórico, Escalón and Zona Rosa offer different atmospheres: monumental squares, restaurants, bars and shopping centres
- International hotels with pool, gym and restaurant, concentrated in a few areas that are easy to compare
Cons
- The transfer from the airport takes nearly an hour: best avoided for short layovers or flights already in the early afternoon
- Getting between San Salvador's different neighbourhoods still means a car or taxi, rarely on foot
Recommended hotels in this area
- City Centro by Marriott San Salvador: 31 rooms right in front of Plaza Gerardo Barrios, in the Centro Histórico: the only hotel with direct access to the square, just steps from the National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Library; rooftop with a 360-degree view.
- Hilton San Salvador: A luxury hotel in the Escalón district, on 89 Avenida Norte; outdoor pool, gym and restaurant, in one of the city's most central areas for business and shopping.
