Entebbe International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Entebbe International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Entebbe Airport is inside the town of the same name, on the shore of Lake Victoria, but Kampala is another matter: the capital is about 40 km away and, with no train at all, driving takes 40 to 60 minutes on the tolled Entebbe-Kampala Expressway, even more than an hour at rush hour on the old road. Those with a short layover or a dawn flight to the gorillas are better off staying in Entebbe, among the hotels near the terminal and those on the lake; those in Kampala for work or who want the capital's life find there the real choice of restaurants and offices, accepting the round trip. The two cities should therefore be considered as two separate destinations, not as a single airport area.
Entebbe, near the airport and on the lake
Airport area · Protea Hotel is 1-2.6 km from the terminal with its own shuttle; Best Western Premier Garden is about 6 km away (10-15 minutes); 2 Friends Beach Hotel is about ten minutes away with airport pick-up included.
Best for: Short layovers, dawn departures for flights to the parks, and those who want a first or last swim in Lake Victoria without facing the traffic to Kampala.
Pros
- All three hotels offer a direct transfer to and from the terminal, useful with heavy safari luggage
- Lake Victoria is a few steps away, with sunsets and waterbirds that Kampala doesn't offer
Cons
- Entebbe is a small provincial town: few restaurants or bars outside the hotels themselves
- For the capital's evening life or offices, it's still 40-60 minutes by car
Recommended hotels in this area
- Protea Hotel by Marriott Entebbe: On the shores of Lake Victoria, 1-2.6 km from the terminal, along the airport ring road; own shuttle, spa and outdoor pool with lake views.
- Best Western Premier Garden Hotel Entebbe: On Berkley Road, about 6 km from the terminal, connected to a small shopping centre; pool with a play area for families and airport shuttle.
- 2 Friends Beach Hotel: 16 rooms run by an Icelandic family on the shore of Lake Victoria, about ten minutes from the terminal with airport pick-up included; small pool and lake views from the beach bar across the way.

Kampala, the capital
City centre · About 40 km from the airport; 40-60 minutes by car on the tolled Entebbe-Kampala Expressway, even more than an hour at rush hour if you use the old free road.
Best for: Business trips and those who want the capital's life, with offices, restaurants and nightlife that Entebbe doesn't offer.
Pros
- The only area with real evening life, besides offices, embassies and shopping centres
- More choice of international chain hotels than in Entebbe
Cons
- The trip from the airport is the same both ways, over an hour at rush hour
- Kampala's traffic can make the time needed to get back to the airport unpredictable: better to leave with plenty of time to spare
Recommended hotels in this area
- Kampala Marriott Hotel: In Nsambya, along Ggaba Road; 181 rooms with a panoramic skybridge over the hills of Kampala, opened in 2026 alongside a block of serviced apartments.
- Sheraton Kampala Hotel: Amid greenery 5 minutes from the business centre, with several in-house restaurants and a private park; among the capital's most historic hotels, about 45 minutes from the airport.
- Hilton Garden Inn Kampala: On Kira Road, across from the British High Commission and a few steps from Acacia Mall; outdoor pool and two restaurants, about 4 km from the centre.
