Erbil International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Erbil Airport has no regular trains or city buses, so every transfer goes through taxi: a few minutes are enough to reach Ankawa, the Christian district north of the city, while the Citadel and the Qaysari Bazaar in the old town are 20-25 minutes away. For those staying more than one night, Ankawa is almost always the better choice, with bars and evening venues that are rare elsewhere in the city. Business travelers find the high-end international hotels on the very central Gulan Street, about 10 minutes from both the airport and the centre. With layovers of just a few hours or night departures, staying close to the terminal avoids unnecessary transfers on a public transport network that in practice doesn't exist.

Ankawa

Airport area · A taxi reaches the terminals in about 5-10 minutes; to the Citadel and the old town it takes 20-25 minutes instead, always by taxi.

Best for: Those arriving or departing at inconvenient hours who want to stay close to the terminal, with the bars and international restaurants of the Christian district within easy reach.

Pros
  • A few minutes by taxi from the terminal, handy with dawn flights or short layovers
  • One of the few districts in the city with bars serving alcohol and a real evening life, thanks to the local Christian population
Cons
  • No public transport: every move, even to the airport, requires a taxi
  • For the old town and the Qaysari Bazaar, you still need 20-25 minutes by taxi

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Ankawa Royal Hotel & Spa: About 5 minutes by taxi from the terminal, with a wine bar, a Turkish restaurant and an indoor spa; among the most central addresses in Ankawa for those who want to stay within walking distance of the district's evening life.
  • Ankawa Holiday Hotel: About 6 km from the airport, with gym, garden and an in-room hot tub; close to the Syriac Heritage Museum, useful for those who want to stay in the district without paying top-tier prices.

Gulan Street

City centre · About 10 minutes by taxi from both the airport and the old town with the Citadel; no regular bus line connects the area to the rest of the city.

Best for: Business trips and those who want an international hotel halfway between the airport and the old town, on one of the city's newest commercial thoroughfares.

Pros
  • International chain hotels facing Gulan Street, a few minutes from both the terminal and the centre
  • The Divan Erbil Hotel looks directly onto Sami Abdul-Rahman Park, the city's largest
Cons
  • An area of offices and shopping centres, with little life on foot after dinner
  • For the Qaysari Bazaar and the Citadel you still need a taxi
