Golosón International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Golosón is the gateway airport for Pico Bonito, the Cangrejal river and the ferries to Utila and Roatán, about 12 km from the centre of La Ceiba: there is no train or regular airport bus, so the way in is by taxi (about 115 lempiras, 10-15 minutes to the centre). Travellers after the beach and the evening life of Zona Viva will find most of the city's hotels there; those who have come for the national park and rafting on the Cangrejal are better off choosing a lodge directly in the valley, even at the cost of a longer journey from the airport.

A couple of steps from Golosón

Airport area · About 1.3 km from the terminal, with a paid airport shuttle available on request.

Best for: Short layovers and ferry connections to Utila or Roatán, when nothing more than a bed near the terminal is needed.

Pros
  • As close to the airport as possible among the properties available in La Ceiba
  • Handy for anyone who needs to catch the morning ferry to the Islas de la Bahía without risking getting stuck in city traffic
Cons
  • Around it only the road to Tela and the airport area, with no independent restaurants nearby
  • For Zona Viva and the beach you still need a 15-20 minute taxi ride

Neighbourhood · About 15-20 minutes by taxi from Golosón, in the Barrio La Isla neighbourhood north-east of the centre, along the sea.

Best for: Travellers who want the beach and the evening life of restaurants and bars within walking distance of the hotel, 15-20 minutes from the airport.

Pros
  • Private beach and the restaurants of several hotels reachable on foot along the seafront
  • The neighbourhood with the highest concentration of evening venues in La Ceiba
Cons
  • The neighbourhood really comes alive mostly on weekends and during Carnival; on weekdays it is quieter than expected
  • A taxi is needed for the historic centre and the market, which cannot be comfortably reached on foot

Best for: Travellers who come for the national park and want to stay right at the entrance, with the airport still just a few minutes away.

Pros
  • Despite being in nature, it is paradoxically among the lodges closest to the airport in the whole area
  • Direct access to the park trails and waterfalls without needing any further transfers
Cons
  • No restaurant or shop outside the property: meals are taken at the lodge
  • For the beach and the life of La Ceiba you still need a 20-minute taxi ride

Cangrejal River Valley

Nearby town · About 45-60 minutes by car from Golosón, up the mountain road along the river.

Best for: Travellers who have come for rafting and trekking in the Cangrejal valley and accept a longer journey from the airport.

Pros
  • Direct access to the Cangrejal rapids for rafting, without needing an extra transfer in the morning
  • A green, quiet valley, far from the city traffic
Cons
  • The journey from the airport is the longest of all the areas in La Ceiba, more than three times that of Zona Viva
  • A mountain road poorly lit at night, best avoided in a self-driven car after dark

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Omega Tours Eco-Jungle Lodge: Eco-lodge in the Cangrejal valley, run by the same rafting agency: a direct starting point for excursions on the river.
  • Villas Pico Bonito: At Km 7.5 of the Carretera de Yaruca, in the same Cangrejal valley; about 45 minutes from the airport, more isolated than the lodge at the park entrance.
