Honiara International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended…

Henderson Airport is about 10-12 km from Honiara, 20-35 minutes by un-metered taxi (200-400 Solomon dollars, to be negotiated before getting in) or with a hotel-organised transfer. It's the only real link: there are no tourist buses or alternatives on the island. The city's few reliable properties are all on the downtown waterfront, so the real choice here is more about the type of property than the neighbourhood.

Downtown Honiara and the waterfront

City centre · 20-35 minutes by un-metered taxi (200-400 SBD, to be negotiated before the ride) or hotel shuttle, covering the roughly 10-12 km that separate Henderson from downtown Honiara.

Best for: Anyone passing through Henderson: it's the area with the city's only verifiable properties, all on the sea and close to the museum and the central market.

Pros

National Museum, central market and waterfront reachable on foot from the hotels on the coast
The only area of the city with hotels offering verifiable international standards

Cons

No tourist bus: every trip, including the one from the airport, requires a taxi to be negotiated
Little choice beyond a handful of properties, with marked quality differences from one hotel to another
