Klagenfurt Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Klagenfurt-Wörthersee is among the closest airports to a city centre in all of Austria, about 3-4 km: a taxi arrives in 10 minutes, bus line 42 in 20-30 minutes with a few more stops. The old town, clustered around Neuer Platz and the Lindwurm statue, remains the most practical base for most trips; those traveling in summer for the lake can instead opt for a resort on the Wörthersee, a few minutes by car from the terminal.

Old town, Neuer Platz

City centre · Bus line 42 to Heiligengeistplatz, 20-30 minutes with several intermediate stops; by taxi about 10 minutes.

Best for: Those who want Klagenfurt's pedestrian centre, with the cathedral and the Lindwurm statue just steps away.

Pros
  • The old town is compact: from here you can reach almost anywhere in the city on foot
  • The taxi from the airport is one of the fastest among Austrian regional airports, about 10 minutes
Cons
  • Bus 42 isn't very frequent: outside peak hours it's worth allowing extra time or using a taxi
  • Out of season, in autumn and winter, evening life in the centre drops off sharply

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Hotel Palais Porcia: A historic palace on Neuer Platz, right opposite the Lindwurm statue; family-run, breakfast served in the mirrored hall.
  • Hotel Sandwirth: A neoclassical building 200 metres from the pedestrian zone and the Lindwurm statue, with a free wellness area and sauna for guests.
  • Skycity Hotel Atrigon: A 6-minute walk from the central station, with a panoramic rooftop terrace; close to the Robert Musil museum.

Lake Wörthersee

Nearby town · About 10-15 minutes by car or taxi from the airport, on the side of the city opposite the old town.

Best for: Summer stays focused on the lake and spa, at a slower pace than the city centre.

Pros
  • 900 metres from Lake Wörthersee, with a 1,600 sqm wellness area including saunas and indoor and outdoor pools
  • Quieter than the city centre, useful for those combining a flight with a few relaxing days
Cons
  • Without a car, trips to the centre or the airport require a taxi
  • Outside the bathing season, from October to April, the lake and surrounding area are much quieter

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Das Seepark Wörthersee Resort: 900 metres from the lake and near the University of Klagenfurt, with a 1,600 sqm wellness area including saunas and an indoor and outdoor pool.
