La Romana International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

La Romana airport started out as Casa de Campo's private airstrip and is still less than 10 minutes from the resort: for guests staying there, it's probably the shortest transfer in the whole Dominican Republic. The town of La Romana is 10-15 minutes away, while Bayahibe beach, the base for trips to Isla Saona, takes another 20-25 minutes to the southeast. Watch out, though, for the Bahia Principe complex that many booking sites list as "La Romana": it's actually near San Pedro de Macorís, about 40 km and half an hour or more from the airport, far from both Casa de Campo and Bayahibe.

Casa de Campo and Altos de Chavón

Airport area · Less than 10 minutes from the terminal: La Romana airport was built specifically to serve this resort.

Best for: Travelers who want the shortest possible transfer, world-class golf and the artists' village of Altos de Chavón.

Pros
  • One of the shortest transfers in the country, just minutes from check-in to the golf course or the beach
  • Three Pete Dye golf courses, including the famous Teeth of the Dog, and the village of Altos de Chavón with craft workshops and an amphitheater
Cons
  • Resort designed for long stays and golf: outside the complex there's no real town life of its own
  • Villa prices and in-resort services are among the highest on the south coast

La Romana City and Playa Caleta

City centre · 10-15 minutes from the terminal, about 7 km; the town is closer to the airport than Casa de Campo in terms of urban traffic.

Best for: Travelers who want real-city prices, the cruise port and Caleta beach without resort costs.

Pros
  • Chain hotel with lower prices than the resorts, 10 minutes from the port and Playa Caleta
  • Convenient base for those who also need to travel to Santo Domingo or Punta Cana, both reachable in a couple of hours
Cons
  • No resort-style beach within walking distance: Playa Caleta is small and urban, not comparable to Bayahibe
  • La Romana is a working town tied to the sugar industry and the port, not designed for beach tourism

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Hilton Garden Inn La Romana: In the La Marina area, 10 minutes from the port and Playa Caleta and about 6 miles (10 minutes) from the airport; outdoor pool and gym.

Ramón Santana (Bahia Principe complex)

Nearby town · About 40 km and 30 minutes or more from La Romana airport, toward San Pedro de Macorís, so far from both Casa de Campo and Bayahibe.

Best for: Travelers specifically booking a Bahia Principe resort: a gated beach community on its own, not a base for visiting Casa de Campo or Bayahibe.

Pros
  • Over a kilometer of palm-lined private beach, typical of the large Bahia Principe complexes
  • All-inclusive prices that are competitive compared to resorts on the east coast
Cons
  • Despite the "La Romana" name on booking sites, the complex is far from the town and from Casa de Campo: not a practical base for leaving the resort
  • Isolated from Bayahibe and Isla Saona, which remain an hour or more away

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Bahia Principe Explore La Romana: In Ramón Santana, not in La Romana town: a minute from the PGA Ocean's 4 golf course and 8 minutes from the Cueva de las Maravillas park, but about 40 km from the airport.
