Lalibela Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Lalibela's airport is 23 km from the city, atop a plateau that requires a 30-40-minute taxi or shuttle ride on a mountain road: almost every hotel arranges the transfer in advance, because few free taxis wait at the airport and fares aren't regulated. Lalibela itself is compact and is mostly explored on foot, with its rock-hewn churches split between the northern group, the southern group and the isolated Bet Giyorgis: staying in the old town means having most of the sites 5-15 minutes away on foot. Those who prefer more peace and panoramic views can head up to the low hills on the edge of town, just a few minutes by taxi from the same sites.

Old town, among the rock-hewn churches

City centre · 23 km and 30-40 minutes by taxi or shuttle from the airport; from here the northern and southern groups of churches are within 5-15 minutes on foot.

Best for: For those who want the rock churches and the center of Lalibela within walking distance, with the option of returning to the hotel several times a day.

Pros
  • St. George's Church (Bet Giyorgis) and most of the northern group within a 10-minute walk
  • Restaurants, craft shops and the town market all in the same area
Cons
  • The difference in elevation between Lalibela's streets makes evening walks more tiring than elsewhere
  • The offering is largely made up of small family-run guest houses, with uneven standards and services

Scenic hillside, outside the center

Neighbourhood · Same 30-40-minute transfer from the airport; from the old town it's 5-10 minutes by taxi or a 15-20-minute uphill walk.

Best for: For those who prefer gardens, mountain views and a bit more peace, accepting a few minutes by taxi or an uphill walk to reach the churches.

Pros
  • Bungalows and gardens with panoramic views over Lalibela and the Lasta mountains
  • A quieter area in the evening, away from the traffic of the center
Cons
  • You need a taxi (or an uphill walk) to reach the churches and restaurants of the center
  • The altitude, over 2,600 meters, makes the uphill walk tiring for those not acclimatized
