L.F. Wade International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

The airport is not near the capital Hamilton, as one might expect, but at the opposite end of the island, in the parish of St. George's: Hamilton still remains the most convenient base for anyone wanting shopping, restaurants and nightlife, provided you accept 20-25 minutes of extra driving or taxi on every trip to the terminal. Travellers arriving or leaving on inconvenient flights, or staying just one night, find beaches and a historic centre a few minutes from the runways in St. George's instead. Further west, towards Paget and the pink beaches of the south shore, transfers run past half an hour.

St. George's

Airport area · St. George's town centre is about 5 minutes from the terminal; St. Catherine's Beach, on the same peninsula, is about 3 miles (5 km) away.

Best for: Dawn flights, one-night stopovers and anyone who wants to stay by the sea without moving far from the terminal.

Pros
  • The closest area to the terminal among those with beaches and a historic centre
  • St. George's is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with colonial lanes you can walk
Cons
  • Far less choice of restaurants and evening venues than Hamilton
  • For shopping or the capital's nightlife there's still a 20-25 minute drive

Recommended hotels in this area

  • The Residences at The St. Regis Bermuda: Suites overlooking St. Catherine's Beach, in historic St. George's; two pools, a St. Regis spa and the nine-hole Five Forts golf course with ocean views from nearly every fairway.

Hamilton

City centre · About 20-25 minutes by car from the terminal, covering roughly 11-16 km along the island.

Best for: Travellers who want the capital's restaurants, shops and nightlife, accepting a longer transfer to the airport.

Pros
  • The island's highest concentration of restaurants, shops and evening venues
  • The hotels on Pitts Bay Road are a few minutes' walk from the centre and the harbour
Cons
  • Every trip to the airport still takes 20-25 minutes
  • No beach right in town: reaching the sea needs a bus or a taxi

Paget and the south shore

Neighbourhood · About 33 minutes by car from the terminal, roughly 19 km.

Best for: Travellers looking for golf or the pink beaches of the south shore, accepting the island's longest transfer to the airport.

Pros
  • Pink beaches of the south shore and the Belmont Hills golf course available to guests
  • Quieter than both Hamilton and the airport area
Cons
  • The island's longest transfer to the terminal, over half an hour
  • Without a car or the hotel shuttle, getting around on your own is limited
