Mariehamn Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Mariehamn Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Mariehamn is the capital of the Åland Islands, Finland's autonomous Swedish-speaking region, and its airport is only 3.5 km from the centre: a taxi covers the distance in 5-10 minutes, while bus line 4 runs on an infrequent schedule. The town is small, and almost all the good hotels are a few minutes' walk from the harbour and the Esplanaden, so the choice depends more on the style of stay, a hotel with a pool or a self-catering apartment, than on location.
Mariehamn centre and the harbour
City centre · 3.5 km from the airport: taxi 5-10 minutes (15-25€); on foot it is about 3 km along a route partly without pavement, not advisable at night; bus line 4 runs on an infrequent schedule.
Best for: Those who want the harbour, the Esplanaden and the capital's restaurants within walking distance.
Pros
- The whole centre is walkable, including the harbour, the Esplanaden and the Torggatan shops
- Several styles of stay a few minutes apart: large hotels with a pool, boutique hotels, modern apartments
Cons
- No fast, frequent link from the airport: a taxi is almost always needed
- In autumn and winter many harbourfront restaurants cut their hours or close early
