Overnight layover at the airport: how to organize yourself
An overnight layover involves hours of waiting at an airport that gradually closes shops, restaurants and common areas: without a plan, you end up tired and without open alternatives.
Check in advance which services stay open
Not all airports keep bars, restaurants or lounges open 24/7: many medium-small hubs close most shops between midnight and 4-5 AM, leaving only vending machines and sometimes a single catering point near still-active gates operational. Check the timetable on the specific hub's website — not generically for "international airports" in general — to avoid counting on a hot meal that won't actually be available.
Where to rest without missing your flight
Large hubs often set aside dimmed-light areas, reclining seats or paid capsules for transiting passengers during night layovers; at smaller hubs, instead, the only option remains rows of common seats near the departure gate, often the safest choice because it stays within the range of boarding announcements (for the quietest spots at each terminal see the guide on where to sleep at an airport). Set multiple alarms on different devices, in addition to relying on voice announcements, to avoid the real risk of falling asleep past boarding time.
Temperature and phone battery
Common areas open all night — especially in cold climates or hubs with large windows — can be noticeably colder than the same areas during the day: dressing in layers, with a heavy coat in carry-on, solves the problem without having to count on blankets that the airport normally doesn't provide. A portable charger finally prevents ending up with a dead phone precisely in the hours when you need it to check gates and updated times for your next flight.
The simplest way to avoid surprises is to check, before landing, the closing time of shops at that specific hub on its official website — not after, when options are already limited.
