Prohibited items on planes: what to check before you leave
Not all prohibitions are equal: some apply everywhere, others depend on the destination country or airline. A level-by-level check at home before you close your suitcase catches most seizure risks.
Universal prohibitions
Undeclared firearms, explosives, corrosive or flammable substances, and fixed blades are prohibited on every flight without exceptions based on country or airline. Common sense is enough for these items: they rarely surprise anyone.
Country- or airline-specific prohibitions
Some states ban collectible knives from importation even in checked luggage, or apply restrictions on religious items with ceremonial blades. Souvenirs like protected shells or corals, non-industrial animal-based food products, or replica ancient weapons can be seized at customs on arrival even if they passed security screening without issue at departure.
Gifts received during travel also deserve checking before packing: an item accepted in good faith might fall into a prohibited category without the traveler knowing.
Professional tools and suspicious quantities
Those traveling with construction tools, chemical samples, or scientific instruments should contact the airline before departure for a thorough check. Quantities matter too: a high number of lighters or over-the-counter medications purchased as souvenirs can raise red flags at screening, even if each individual item is legal.
Useful documentation
Musical instruments or souvenirs with ivory components or other protected materials often require a specific certificate to cross certain borders. Keeping purchase receipts for valuable items or unusual-looking objects speeds up any additional customs check.
Before traveling to a non-European destination, check that country's specific customs regulations: the general European rule doesn't cover all local exceptions.
