Seymour Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Baltra airport sits on a completely uninhabited Galápagos island, reserved for the runway and a handful of service buildings: there is no overnight accommodation on the island itself. Arriving passengers take a shuttle bus to the Itabaca Channel, cross it by ferry in a few minutes, and then board a second bus that crosses the Santa Cruz highlands to Puerto Ayora, the only real town in the area; the whole transfer takes about an hour and a half. All the useful accommodation for visiting the central Galápagos is therefore in Puerto Ayora, not near the runway.

Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz

Nearby town · About 1h30 from Baltra airport: 15 minutes by bus to the Itabaca Channel, a few minutes by ferry, then about an hour by bus across the Santa Cruz highlands into town.

Best for: Travelers visiting the central Galápagos: it's the only real tourist base in the area, a starting point for tours to nearby islands and to the Darwin Station.

Pros
  • The only concentration of restaurants, tour agencies and shops in the central Galápagos
  • Base for almost all day tours and for cruise embarkations
Cons
  • The transfer from the airport always requires bus plus ferry plus bus, with no direct alternative
  • No lodging, however close to the pier, is truly a few steps from the airport itself
