Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Kingsford Smith is one of the closest airports to the centre among the world's major cities: the Airport Link station takes you to Central in 13 minutes, and the centre is 20-30 minutes away by car. Sleeping in the city therefore costs almost nothing in terms of time, and the train remains the most predictable choice even for a morning flight. A hotel in the airport area makes sense mainly for departures before 6 a.m., when the first morning train may not be enough. The terminal matters too: international T1 and domestic T2 and T3 are separate and cannot be linked on foot, but a free shuttle connects them.

In front of the international terminal

At the airport · The hotel is opposite terminal T1: 181 steps to the international check-in. For the domestic terminals T2 and T3 there is the free Terminal Transfer Bus, every 15 minutes between 5.30 and 22.30, a 10-minute ride.

Best for: Early-morning international departures or night arrivals, with no transfers.

Pros
  • From bed to the international check-in desk in a few minutes on foot
  • Airport Link station in the terminal: Central 13 minutes away
  • Restaurant and gym without leaving the building
Cons
  • For domestic flights you need the shuttle, which does not run at night
  • Around it there are only car parks and runways: for dinner you stay in the hotel

Pros
  • A single train from the airport: 13 minutes with no changes
  • Regional trains to the Blue Mountains and the coast leave from Central
  • Chinatown, late-opening restaurants and Darling Harbour within walking distance
Cons
  • The station and the surrounding streets are busy, and noisy in the evening
  • The harbour and the Opera House require another train or a long walk
