The complete guide to departing from the airport

From airport entrance to boarding, the route always goes through the same four phases: arrival, check-in, security controls and waiting at the gate, each with different times and error margins.

Arrival and check-in

The time to calculate for parking, finding the correct terminal and the path to security varies greatly from airport to airport: in the larger airports it's worth adding an extra margin just for internal movements. Check-in, often already completed online, remains physically necessary at the counter if you need to drop off checked baggage.

Security controls and departures area

Security controls are the mandatory passage to the departures area and the point where most avoidable delays concentrate: having documents, liquids and electronics already organized before reaching the conveyor belt reduces queue time in a concrete way, as explained in the guide to stress-free security controls.

Waiting at the gate and boarding

In the final phase, the gate indicated on your boarding pass should always be confirmed on airport monitors, as it can change even close to boarding time. Staying near the indicated area, rather than wandering off to shop, prevents you from missing announcements or last-minute changes.

To leave nothing to chance, it's best to calculate the time for each phase separately, not as a single overall margin: this way, a delay at security doesn't automatically add up to parking delay.
