Wallblake Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Clayton J. Lloyd International (still known as Wallblake) takes only small turboprops from San Juan, Antigua and St Maarten: many visitors instead arrive by ferry from Marigot, on St Martin, in just 20 minutes at sea and with around ten departures a day. Anguilla has no scheduled buses or a real town: the choice of area depends on the beach you want on your doorstep, not on how close it is to the terminal. Travellers flying directly into Clayton J. Lloyd who want the shortest transfer stay near The Valley; those arriving by ferry find it easier to stay in Blowing Point. Either way a rental car or fixed-rate taxis remain essential, because the island has no public transport.

The airport and The Valley

Airport area · Bel Ti Plas is in Rock Farm, about 2 km from Crocus Bay Beach; Deany's Uptop Luxury Suite is in North Hill Village: both a few minutes by taxi from the airport. The island has no scheduled buses, only government-set fixed-rate taxis or rental cars.

Best for: Travellers arriving on a direct flight to Clayton J. Lloyd who want the shortest transfer, or anyone departing early in the morning on one of the few charter connections.

Pros
  • A few minutes by taxi from the terminal, handy for the small turboprop flights from San Juan, St Maarten or Antigua
  • The Valley concentrates the island's offices and the few shops, useful in case of flight mishaps
Cons
  • The busiest beaches, Shoal Bay and Meads Bay, stay a 10-15 minute taxi ride away
  • A residential area with no restaurants of its own: dinner depends on a taxi or car

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Bel Ti Plas: Guest house in Rock Farm, about 2 km from Crocus Bay Beach and 5.3 km from Shoal Bay, a few minutes from Clayton J. Lloyd airport; run directly by the owner, named in reviews as Kurtz.
  • Deany's Uptop Luxury Suite: Third-floor apartment in North Hill Village, in the island's central area; 4 minutes by car from Sandy Ground bay and its beach bars (Elvis, Dolce Vita, Johnno's).

North coast: Shoal Bay and Limestone Bay

Neighbourhood · 10-15 minutes by car or taxi from the airport; no public transport, only fixed-rate taxis or rental cars.

Best for: Travellers who want the beach right outside the door, on the island's Atlantic side, away from The Valley's (minimal) traffic.

Pros
  • Shoal Bay East is among the best-preserved beaches in the Caribbean, with beach bars like Uncle Ernie's and Gwen's
  • Limestone Bay is a smaller, more sheltered bay, with fewer tourists
Cons
  • A rental car or taxi is needed for every trip, even just for dinner outside the accommodation
  • Few shops nearby: grocery shopping is done in The Valley or Sandy Ground

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Ocean Terrace Condominiums: Eleven condominiums on a hill above Shoal Bay East, with round-the-clock on-site management; the units, sold and rented separately, have a full kitchen and sea views towards the nearby islands.
  • Sandcastle Villa & Beach House: House right on the sand of Limestone Bay, a sheltered bay on the north coast; comes with a 4x4 jeep, kayak, SUP boards and snorkelling gear included in the stay.

Blowing Point and the ferry to St Martin

Near the airport link · Public ferries connect Blowing Point to Marigot in 20 minutes, with around 10 departures a day between 7:30 and 18:00, no booking needed (ticket bought on the spot, 30 USD each way).

Best for: Travellers arriving or leaving by ferry from Marigot, St Martin, instead of by plane, or anyone who wants to stay near Rendezvous Bay.

Pros
  • Suited to travellers planning their trip around the ferry rather than the flight to Clayton J. Lloyd
  • Rendezvous Bay is a few minutes' walk away, less busy than Shoal Bay
Cons
  • 20-25 minutes by car from the airport: worth considering if flying instead of taking the ferry
  • An area with few restaurants independent of the accommodation

Recommended hotels in this area

  • White Sands Anguilla Sand Unit: One-bedroom "Sand" unit (sleeps up to 6) a few minutes' walk from the Blowing Point ferry terminal and Rendezvous Bay.
