Yellowknife Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Yellowknife, capital of the Northwest Territories and a destination for watching the northern lights, is a small city: the airport is only 4 km and 10-15 minutes from downtown, with a fixed-fare taxi at 25-35 CAD or the shared Aurora Express shuttle in 20-30 minutes. Choosing a zone therefore matters less here than elsewhere: almost all the listed properties are family-run guesthouses and B&Bs, concentrated downtown or in the residential neighbourhoods just outside.

Downtown Yellowknife

Best for: Most visitors, since the whole city is minutes from the airport.

Pros
  • The whole city is reachable on foot or in a few minutes by taxi from the airport
  • Family-run guesthouses, often more affordable than chain hotels from the South
Cons
  • Very few chain hotels: the choice is almost entirely between B&Bs and guesthouses
