Aeromexico: Fleet, Routes and What to Expect Flying Mexico's Carrier

Aeromexico is Mexico's main carrier, flying since 1934 and a member of the SkyTeam alliance. The airline is tied to Delta Air Lines, which holds a stake of just under 20%, through a joint venture that deeply integrates the two carriers' networks on routes between Mexico and the United States. After a debt restructuring completed in 2022, it now operates from its hub at Terminal 2 of Mexico City airport.

From Chapter 11 to a stronger group

The restructuring process begun during the pandemic allowed the airline to renegotiate its debts and leasing contracts, emerging with a more sustainable financial structure and a partly renewed fleet compared with the pre-pandemic period.

Two fleets for two missions

On short and medium-haul routes it operates Boeing 737 families (NG and MAX 8/9), while long-haul relies on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner (787-8 and 787-9 versions), used on routes to Europe and South America.

Routes: the advantage of the Delta joint venture

Besides the dense Mexican domestic network, the joint venture with Delta greatly widens connection options on routes between Mexico and the United States, with codeshare itineraries that often would not be available if the two operated separately; on long-haul it flies directly to Madrid, Paris and London.

On board: a business product in line with SkyTeam

Long-haul business class, marketed as Clase Premier, offers seats that recline to a fully flat position on the 787s, with the Club Premier loyalty program integrated with Delta's SkyMiles system for earning and redeeming points.

Aeromexico is a solid choice if you travel between Mexico and the United States and want to benefit from the wide range of connection options offered by the joint venture with Delta, as well as if you want a consistent business product on long-haul flights to Europe. It is less advantageous if you are after the absolute lowest fares on Mexican domestic routes, where local low-cost carriers generally remain cheaper. The practical tip: if your trip combines an Aeromexico flight with a Delta flight on the same booking, check that your baggage is tagged for the entire itinerary from check-in, to avoid having to collect and re-check it at the intermediate airport.
