China Southern Airlines: A Guide to the Routes of Asia's Largest Carrier
China Southern Airlines, headquartered in Guangzhou, is the airline with the largest fleet in Asia counting its subsidiaries Xiamen Airlines and Chongqing Airlines. It left SkyTeam in January 2019 to build independent bilateral partnerships, and for almost a decade it was the only Chinese airline to operate the Airbus A380, which was permanently retired in November 2022.
History and positioning
China Southern's most recognizable strategy is the so-called Canton Route: using Guangzhou's position to route passengers between Oceania, Southeast Asia and Europe or North America through a single Chinese stop. Leaving SkyTeam in 2019 marked a turn toward independent codeshare agreements, including a significant one with American Airlines, abandoning the logic of the global alliance in favor of tailor-made partnerships.
The fleet
Counting the subsidiaries Xiamen Airlines and Chongqing Airlines, China Southern has the largest fleet in Asia by number of aircraft. The long-haul core includes the 777-300ER, 787-9 and A350-900; for almost ten years the airline was also the only Chinese carrier to operate the Airbus A380, with five aircraft permanently retired after the last flight in November 2022, well before the twenty years of useful life typical of the model.
Routes and network
Guangzhou Baiyun remains the pivot of the Canton Route toward Oceania and Southeast Asia in connection with Europe and North America, flanked by a vast domestic network and by the secondary hubs of Xiamen and Chongqing run by the subsidiaries.
What passengers say
Ratings vary quite a lot by cabin and route: long-haul widebody business class draws competitive reviews, domestic service is described as average, and complaints focus on refund handling during the frequent delays linked to the typhoon season that hits southern China.
China Southern is the most efficient choice if you travel between Oceania or Southeast Asia and Europe using the Canton Route with a single stop in Guangzhou. It is no longer the right airline if you are specifically looking for an A380 flight: the type was withdrawn from the fleet in 2022, even though some less up-to-date travel guides still mention it. The practical tip is to check the typhoon season calendar, roughly June to October, before booking a tight connection in Guangzhou: storms in the South China Sea are the main cause of disruption on this network.
