Flyr: The Norwegian Airline Born in 2021 and Bankrupt Just Nineteen Months Later
Flyr was a Norwegian low-cost airline founded on August 14, 2020 and operating since June 30, 2021, based at Oslo-Gardermoen Airport. Created to compete directly with Norwegian on domestic and leisure routes to the Mediterranean with very aggressive fares, it ceased all operations on January 31, 2023: this article therefore describes an airline that no longer exists and cannot be booked.
History and positioning
Flyr's model aimed at extremely competitive prices to quickly gain market share against Norwegian, both on Norwegian domestic routes and on leisure connections to southern Europe, in a market already marked by post-pandemic instability in air transport.
The fleet and routes
Operations were based on a fleet of Boeing 737-800s used mainly on Norwegian domestic routes and seasonal connections to Mediterranean destinations, without ever reaching the size of its competitor Norwegian.
What went wrong
On February 1, 2023 Flyr filed for bankruptcy after failing to raise the capital needed from shareholders and investors to cover the cost of emission allowances under the European ETS system and the planned strengthening of operations for spring and summer. The liquidity crisis proved insurmountable within a few days, with more than four hundred employees losing their jobs.
Flyr is not an airline you can book today: if a third-party site or an old link still shows flights under this brand, the information is outdated and should be ignored.
If you still hold a voucher or an unrefunded Flyr booking, the correct route is not to contact the airline, which no longer exists, but to turn to the bankruptcy proceedings through the Norwegian business register (Brønnøysundregistrene), the only official channel for any claims for residual credit.
