KM Malta Airlines: Malta's New Flag Carrier After Air Malta

KM Malta Airlines was formally established in October 2023 and began operating in March 2024, taking over from the historic Air Malta after the latter ceased operations for good. The new carrier, wholly owned by the Maltese state, was created with the explicit aim of avoiding the same financial mistakes that led to the closure of its predecessor.

A restart designed to be sustainable

Unlike Air Malta, which ran a network of 37 often loss-making routes, KM Malta Airlines launched with a deliberately smaller network: 17 routes chosen on the basis of profitability, cutting the connections that generated the biggest losses.

A new, uniform fleet

The entire fleet consists of eight Airbus A320neo aircraft, latest-generation jets chosen partly for their fuel efficiency, in line with the trend among many mid-sized European carriers to simplify their fleets around a single model.

Routes: central Europe and the United Kingdom at the core

The network connects Malta Airport to destinations such as London Gatwick and Heathrow, Rome Fiumicino, Milan Linate, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Munich, Vienna and Zurich, with the stated goal of gradually expanding the network without repeating the excessive fragmentation of the past.

An airline still to be judged over time

Having been operating for only a few years, it does not yet have a track record of independent reviews large enough to support a settled judgment on service quality, unlike carriers that have been flying for decades.

KM Malta Airlines is a solid choice for anyone traveling between Malta and the main European cities covered by the current network, with the advantage of a young, uniform fleet. It is less suitable if you are looking for connections to destinations that Air Malta used to serve but that are no longer part of the current, more selective network. The practical tip: always check the updated network on the airline's website before assuming a connection that existed with Air Malta is still available, because several historic routes have not been reinstated in the new network.
