Madagascar Airlines (Air Madagascar): Where the Airline Stands Today

Madagascar's flag carrier has a long history, born in 1962 as Madair and known for decades as Air Madagascar. After a name change to Madagascar Airlines and years of financial difficulty, new management that arrived in May 2026 launched a recovery plan that also includes a return to the historic brand by the end of October 2026.

An airline in full reconstruction

The plan announced by the new management is not a simple logo restyling: it includes an operational, organizational, commercial and financial restructuring, with the declared goal of putting costs, governance and the relationship with passengers back in order after years of irregular service.

A fleet reduced to turboprops only

Today the airline operates a fleet made up entirely of ATR 72s: four of the -500 version and one newer-generation -600. It is a fleet designed for the shortest domestic and regional routes, with no widebody aircraft for long-haul, which the airline operated in the past.

Routes being restored, not yet complete

The regional link to Moroni, in the Comoros, has already been restored with two weekly frequencies. The return of flights to Saint-Denis de la Réunion, China, Bangkok and Marseille is still being planned: routes historically important to the airline but not yet reactivated at the time of the restructuring.

Why it pays to check before booking

Precisely because the network is in the middle of being rebuilt, the status of a specific route can change from month to month: a destination announced as "coming soon" may not yet be operating when you book.

Madagascar Airlines is today a realistic choice mainly for travel within Madagascar and, where already restored, for the link to the Comoros. It is not, however, the time to rely on the airline for a direct intercontinental flight to Europe or Asia, since these routes are suspended and their return does not yet have a definite date. Practical tip: before booking a long-haul route with this carrier, check directly on the airline's website or through a local agency whether that specific destination is really already operating, and don't rely only on the list of historic destinations.
