Jyvaskyla Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Jyväskylä Airport is in Tikkakoski, about 20 km from the centre: there's no regular bus line, so the transfer is almost always a 20-25-minute taxi (€50-70) or a shuttle organised to coincide with flights, to be booked in advance. For most stays the centre, gathered around Kauppakatu and the station, remains the most practical base; anyone who wants to stretch the stay between slopes, bowling and spa can instead aim for Laajavuori, just five minutes by car from the centre.
Centre and Kauppakatu
City centre · 20 km from Tikkakoski airport: taxi 20-25 minutes (€50-70), or a pre-booked shuttle coordinated with flights; there's no regular bus line.
Best for: Anyone who wants Kauppakatu's pedestrian centre, the Alvar Aalto museums and the train and bus station just steps away.
Pros
- The whole centre is walkable starting from Kauppakatu, including the Alvar Aalto buildings
- A good choice between central chain hotels and independent boutiques
Cons
- No direct train or bus from the airport: the transfer always has to be arranged in advance
- During peak times for major events (such as WRC Rally Finland) room prices rise sharply
Recommended hotels in this area
- Original Sokos Hotel Alexandra Jyväskylä: Right opposite Jyväskylä's Travel Centre (buses and trains); recently renovated rooms and sauna area, two restaurants including one serving French cuisine.
- Scandic Jyväskylä Station: A four-minute walk from the station, with an indoor pool and relaxation area; reviews praise the soundproofing despite windows facing the tracks.
- Boutique Hotel Yöpuu: A building from the 1920s in the heart of the city, with the Pöllöwaari gourmet restaurant and a welcome drink in the inner courtyard or at the wine bar.
- Hotel Verso: An eco-certified design hotel on the pedestrian street Kauppakatu, some rooms with a private sauna; the breakfast is often cited among the best in the city.

Laajavuori
Neighbourhood · Five minutes by car from Jyväskylä's centre (so about 25-30 minutes from the airport), with a direct local bus link from the Travel Centre.
Best for: Anyone who wants to combine the stay with skiing, bowling and a spa without staying in the centre, with a direct local bus from the station.
Pros
- Laajis Ski Centre's slopes a kilometre away, handy for anyone skiing just half a day between two flights
- An 800 sqm spa with a pool for children and a bowling alley in the same hotel
Cons
- Outside the resort area there's nothing else: evening life in the centre requires a bus or a car
- Some reviews find the rooms pricey for the level, even after the recent renovation
Recommended hotels in this area
- Scandic Laajavuori: A kilometre from the slopes of Laajis Ski Centre, with an 800 sqm spa, several saunas and a glow-in-the-dark bowling alley; renovated between 2025 and early 2026.
