Maldivian: A Guide to Domestic Flights in the Maldives (and Why It Isn't the Seaplane)

Maldivian is the domestic flag carrier of the Maldives, run by the state-owned Island Aviation Services. It operates from Velana International Airport, near Malé, connecting the capital to dozens of islands and atolls across the archipelago where there is no road alternative.

A logistical role more than a tourist one

Contrary to what many travelers imagine, Maldivian is not designed primarily for luxury tourism: its main job is to guarantee everyday mobility for the local population between Malé and the outlying atolls, with resort tourism as an additional source of demand.

An all-turboprop fleet

The fleet is made up of De Havilland Dash 8 aircraft in several versions (Q200, Q300, Q400), well suited to the short runways of many of the Maldives' outlying airports, where a conventional jet could not operate.

Routes: Malé as the hub for everything

Almost every connection goes through Velana, from which dozens of routes fan out to the regional airports of the atolls, often with daily frequencies timed to match international flights arriving in Malé.

The biggest source of confusion: it is not a seaplane

Many travelers confuse Maldivian with the seaplane operators that transfer tourists to the most remote resorts. These are in fact separate private companies (such as Trans Maldivian Airways or Manta Air) that operate only seaplanes and have no corporate link with Maldivian.

Maldivian is the right choice when your resort transfer uses a domestic airport followed by a speedboat, not a seaplane. It is not the right operator if your resort arranges a seaplane transfer, which is run by a different private company with separate ticketing. The practical tip: before booking any domestic flight, ask the resort explicitly whether the planned transfer is a Maldivian flight plus a boat or a seaplane, because booking the wrong ticket can make you miss the transfer arranged by the resort.
