Portugalia Airlines (TAP Express): The Regional Network Connecting Portugal with Embraers
Portugalia Airlines, 100% owned by TAP Air Portugal, has been commercially rebranded TAP Express since March 2016 as part of a harmonization of brand and fleet: it operates from the Lisbon hub, with a secondary base in Porto, as a regional arm feeding the parent company's intercontinental network.
History and positioning
Born as an independent Portuguese regional airline, Portugalia was fully acquired by TAP and since 2016 has operated under the TAP Express brand as part of a single fleet and brand strategy, rather than as an autonomous competitor in the Portuguese market.
The fleet
The fleet is built around the Embraer E-Jet, with a dozen ERJ-190s and seven ERJ-195s in early 2025, sized for European routes with lower demand than TAP's main narrowbodies.
Routes and network
It connects Lisbon and Porto to Portuguese regional destinations and to short-haul European airports, feeding TAP's intercontinental network in Lisbon rather than building an independent route map.
On board and service
The service is single-class, integrated into TAP's booking system and the Miles&Go loyalty program: booking a TAP Express flight therefore happens as a segment of a TAP itinerary, not as a product in its own right.
What passengers say
Feedback on TAP Express segments tends to follow TAP's general reputation, with a reasonably comfortable experience on short regional legs and the same widespread criticisms about tight connection times and customer service responsiveness, rather than problems specific to the regional brand.
It is worth knowing about Portugalia/TAP Express above all if your TAP itinerary includes a regional segment operated under this brand, since the comfort on an Embraer E-Jet differs from that on TAP's main A320/A321s. It is not suited to those who want to book it as a separate airline, because tickets are bought exclusively through TAP. When the TAP confirmation says operated by Portugalia/TAP Express, expect a single-class regional cabin and plan your carry-on accordingly, with less overhead bin space than on TAP's A320s.
