VivaAerobus: Fares, Baggage and the Real Cost of Mexican Low-Cost Flying

VivaAerobus was founded in 2006 through a partnership between the Mexican bus group IAMSA and, in more recent years, with a minority stake held by Ryanair Holdings. It operates from its hub in Monterrey with the most aggressive ultra-low-cost model on the Mexican market, aiming for one of the lowest cost structures in Latin America.

A model built on low operating costs

The legacy of the bus industry shows in its approach to cost management: quick aircraft turnarounds, staff with multiple duties and a network that favors airports with lower airport charges than the large traditional hubs.

Fleet: only Airbus A320s, and growing

The fleet consists exclusively of aircraft from the Airbus A320 family, including the new-generation neo versions, chosen partly for their lower fuel consumption compared with the previous generation.

Routes: domestic Mexico and the United States

Besides a very dense domestic network linking dozens of Mexican cities, VivaAerobus operates numerous routes to Texas and California, among the busiest corridors in air traffic between the two countries.

Fares and baggage: every extra has a price

  • The base fare (often called "Basic") excludes checked baggage, seat selection and free booking changes.
  • Carry-on baggage beyond the minimum allowed dimensions is charged separately, and costs rise sharply if extras are bought at the airport rather than online in advance.

VivaAerobus is the cheapest option if you travel light on Mexican domestic routes or to the southern United States and plan your baggage and extra purchases in advance. It is not suitable if you travel with several suitcases or want flexibility to change dates, both of which quickly inflate the final cost compared with the starting fare. The practical tip: check the exact dimensions allowed for free carry-on baggage before you pack, because even a few centimeters over the limit means a charge at the gate, generally higher than what it would cost to buy it online in advance.
